In our gym, every member has a “Coach for Life”. For some with a background in functional fitness, this is an odd concept, as the role for most coaches at other gyms to lead classes, be friendly and hang out with members in the hopes of building “community”, oh and do their best to keep a large group of people from hurting themselves on a daily basis.
That model is fine in accomplishing what it accomplishes. But, if you’re reading this, you know that our model is somewhat different. We feel that by building a deeper one on one connection with our clients from day one, we are able to affect REAL change in people’s lifestyle and behaviors over the long haul.
So, how do you as a client get the MOST out of your coach?
It all starts with a conversation
The Coach should be asking in depth questions about not only what results you want achieve but WHY you want to achieve them
You (the client) have to be HONEST about what they want to achieve. Be a little vulnerable and remember that we are paid to help you. You are trusting us with a huge responsibility, it only works against you in the long run if you hide from what you really want and why. We promise, this conversation is between the two of us, and we will respect your privacy.
Plan for success:
You and your coach are now on the same page with what you want to accomplish, now it’s time to collaborate on the HOW. Maybe you need to focus on your diet right away. Maybe lifting is right for you. Maybe CrossFit is just the ticket. Or maybe it's a mix of everything. Only you and your coach will know for sure. We create custom solutions just for you.
Once a plan has been created, your coach is going to ask you a really important question…”are you on board? Like 100%?” Once we agree, then it’s time for the fun to begin!
Rubber hits the road:
Now we have a road map, it’s time to get crackin! Now, it’s important to think of this like going on a long road trip with a friend. Your Coach is in the passenger seat and shows the way…you have to do all of the driving.
The only way for this to work is for you to trust that the Coach is an EXPERT navigator. From there, it should be smooth sailing.
To ensure that it is the case, an honest feedback loop has to be established. Open, honest, and consistent communication between the two of you will lay the foundation for trust, and progress moving forward.
Failure to do this leads to some of these problems:
-Your Coach will begin reverting to strategies that have worked for other clients in the past in the hopes of putting a finger on what will work for you.
-A coach might attempt a more general, one size fits all approach doesn’t ends up pushing you in a direction you’re not real sure about.
You don’t know what you don’t know
It’s ok not to “know” what you need when you first start. That’s why you have come to us…doing all of this on your own was a daunting task. All we ask is that you keep your mind open to new ideas, and methods than you may be accustomed to. Those with a focus on learning, tend to get the best results.
The absolute best situations are ones where both Coach and Client are collaborating as they work on their plan, in order to fine tune things as they go.
If your gym doesn’t have a mechanism for you to have this conversation on a consistent basis, with an experienced, professional coach you trust…time to give us a ring.
