Minimize Blue Light



We know that getting 8 hours of good, quality sleep each night is the best way to ensure that we keep our bodies and minds in tip top operating shape.  In fact, I would argue that it is the absolute FIRST thing people get a handle on when they start looking into improving their overall health.  Just like you can't "out train a bad diet."  If you aren't sleeping well, you are setting yourself up for failure.  I am currently putting together a weekly series on sleep for the blog, so stay tuned for more of that...but for today, let's talk about one thing you can do right away to improve your sleep quality.

Minimize blue light...

What the heck is that?

Simply put, this is the type of light that is emitted by our screens (TV/Computer/Phones).  It's important that as we get into the evening hours we minimize our exposure to this type of light.  

Why?

Getting this stimulus sends signals to our body that it is the middle of the day.  See, we have developed our sleep/awake cycles over 200,000 years, and as such, when your body is exposed to light, it reacts by doing a bit of a hormonal dance to help keep you awake so you can be ready to go climb a tree, fight a bear, run for your life, or go gather food.  

So, it stands to reason, that if you are holding your phone 8" from your face at 11pm whilst laying in a dark room...your body doesn't know WHAT  is going on.  At best, your body won't prepare you for sleep the way it should and it will affect the quality of your sleep.  Worst case, you won't sleep much at all, causing even more stress on the system.

So...in the evenings, dim the lights, shut down the phones, turn off the TV, and just chill before hitting the sack.
