Starting a new "thing" can be daunting.
You don't know where to begin, you question your abilities, you think yourself inadequate compared to others.
Finding the motivation to keep going on your new quest seems insurmountable to do.
You keep waiting for something to click, that eventually you will find something that will give you that passion to keep going!
Well you better keep waiting, because that "thing" will most likely never happen.
De-Bunking the Motivation Myth
Author Mark Manson, "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" breaks the myth of waiting for motivation down very simply,
"Most people only commit to action if they feel a certain level of motivation. And they only feel motivation when they feel an emotional inspiration. People only become motivated to study for the exam when they’re afraid of the consequences. People only pick up and learn that instrument when they feel inspired by the people they can play for....But there’s a problem with operating under this framework: often the changes and actions we most need in our lives are inspired by negative emotions which simultaneously hinder us from taking action."
So what is Mark getting at here?
To put it in more relatable terms (Using Fitness for example) most people start a new fitness routine when they see how it helped change a friends life, or how the lack of it negatively affected a relatives life. They feel this emotional response and decide to do something about it so they can share/avoid similar results. This event motivates him/her to seek out a gym where they would be able to fully achieve the desired results (Being healthier/stronger/etc.)
However the problem turns into closed loop where the individual goes from being inspired to motivated to taking action, to being inspired again, to being motivated to take another action., and so on.
Is there anyway to break away from this repetitive cycle?
Well Manson postulates a "Do Something Principle"where he reorients the cycle to get the individual to take Action which will lead into Inspiration finally getting to the all holy Motivation.
How does this apply to you?
Taking Action For Your Health
Many of use who go to the gym are there for a particular reason.
We want to _______, so it can make us feel _________, which will allow us to do __________.
Well what if instead of trying to solve a fill in the blank question try this: Go to the gym and train, for no reason other than that you NEED to.
Once you begin to see improvements in the amount of weight you can lift, pounds lost, desired features enhanced, etc. you will get a positive boost to your psyche.
By this point it might even be 2 - 4 months in and you are well to adding some serious performance gains during your Novice cycle.
*Novice - A person new to or inexperienced in a field or situation.
Remember this does not apply only to those at the gym but to any and every new hobby you start.
So what are you waiting for?
